Hi, I am Flo. I am a graphic designer with 16 years of
experience in the creative industry.
I help businesses create exceptional work for their brand
with passion and heart which helps amplify their brand
values, attract ideal clients and give them that extra
confidence they need to put themselves out there and be
noticed.
Being Different
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a wild imagination and love to conjure up stories in my mind. I would draw out floor plans of what my dream home would look like, write a script in my head and play act with my sister and I will always end up being the hero in our pretend movies.
I have always been highly attuned to the sights and sounds of my surroundings and have a photographic and associative mind. I vividly remember taking long walks in my grandmother’s backyard looking for anything interesting – discarded toys and bottle caps. My ability to understand people’s emotions were also amplified as my roving eyes would constantly look for images, expressions and places that sparked my imagination.
Over time, I honed my empathy skills and sharpened my attention to
details.
Undeterred
I found it challenging to fit in when I was in high school and only excelled in art. Art allowed me to create works that were unique and different from everyone else. I recalled my art teacher calling out that my apple should be red and not brown. But why not? It is an apple to me regardless of what color it is and it is RED to me!
However I never let myself get discouraged and used being different to my advantage.
Although being different can feel lonely, I used my non-conforming ways to be experimental in all my work.
I ask the why’s and push boundaries.
I dared to be different. I want to
champion that being different
is great!

Realizing that my heart was not in academic
studies, I enrolled myself into art college.
Although I have had exposure with
photography, painting, animation and
sculpting…what called me most strongly was
graphic design.
I was excited to be able to find a way to convey emotions and translate an idea into a visual on a computer using photography, illustrations and typography. I could manipulate fonts and customize it to look creative and unique.
I was inspired by ‘old school’ famous graphic designers for e.g. David Carson, Neville Brody and Saul Bass…how they are able to create extraordinary works of art using just typography and strong imagery! I was particularly in awe of Saul Bass as he has created some of the world’s best-known brands’ logos for Bell, AT&T, Warner communications and Lawry’s just to name a few. He also famously designed title sequence graphics and symbols for Alfred Hitchcock’s movies namely Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest!
“Thinking made visible.”
This quote from Saul Bass catapulted
my creative calling. All my life I have felt
invisible. Expressing myself through art is the
only way to make my inner world visible and
accessible to people around me. I feel a sense
of connection when that happens.
After I graduated from art college, I was looking for creative work that felt meaningful not only for me but for other people too. I wanted to help business owners translate their visions into a creative reality but I was not sure what I wanted to specialize in.
My first opportunity arrived when I met a blind masseur who asked me to help her rebrand her logo ‘Forever Young’. She wanted it to be displayed prominently at her shop. After I designed the logo, I came up with an idea of using a special type of liquid that hardens and embosses when dry and I traced the outlines of the logo with the liquid, so she could feel the outlines of the logo on paper and ‘see’ it.
When I met her to show her the logo, she felt her fingers all over the logo on the A4 paper that I printed and I could see that she was visibly moved and she thanked me for taking the effort to let her ‘see’ the logo. She said it was beautiful and more so she was moved by how thoughtful I was.
From this experience, I told myself this is how I want to go forward in life as a creative.
To create works that resonates with people built upon with empathy and from my heart.
